Lion Cake

My son Cade had a Jungle themed birthday party when he turned 4. Here is his cake:
I got a new "hair" frosting tip to do the mane and I love how it turned out. For this cake I baked a 9 inch round and a 9 x 13 inch cake (cut into triangles) plus cupcakes.Happy Birthday Cade!I also painted this Monkey bean bag toss game and made banana bean bags. This was a hit at the party, and we had it in our house for weeks afterward because the kids loved playing!

Island Cake

My little boy and my dad share a birthday, which is a lot of fun. It's also at the beginning of summer, so I am always in the mood for something tropical by then. When Brennan turned 3 I made this cupcake cake for him to wake up to in the morning.... the Island cake I made for the family party for both Brennan and my dad.

I used a chocolate mold and made seashells with swirled white and milk chocolate. I crushed Nilla wafers to use as the sand. My dad LOVES fishing, so I made a fishing pole with a skewer and dental floss. The palm tree is a skewer and construction paper fronds.

First Birthday

It's tradition in our family to give a baby a chocolate cake for their first birthday. Here is a picture of Ray's-- I made her her very own cake-- as well as the adult-size version to share.

She was very apprehensive about the whole cake thing, and cried when we put her finger in it! What a little princess!

Crab Cakes

I threw a little backyard luau for my husbands 30th birthday. In keeping with the theme, and making it fun for the kids (plus, who wants to feel like they're 30 on their birthday anyway) these are the desserts I made.

Crab Cakes:
Legs and eye stalks were Twizzlers, the pincers were half of a Swedish Fish sliced open.
Oysters:
The "pearls" were yogurt covered raisins, and I just used store bought sugar cookies for the shells. If I were to do this again I would make them smaller-- maybe using Nilla wafers instead.

Ladybug Birthday

My husband and I got back from a cruise the day before our daughter's 2nd birthday, so I was very short on time but didn't want to not celebrate her birthday on the day. We got up that morning and the boys helped decorate, then we went shopping, and then while Ray was down for her nap in the afternoon the boys and I made her birthday cake. I just used a metal bowl to bake the cake in, and had some extra cake batter so I did some mini-bug cupcakes. When I'm making a cute birthday cake I always make my own frosting.... but due to the time constraints this time I just used a can of strawberry frosting. Store bought is never the right consistency, but it sure does taste yummy!
Ray LOVED her ladybug cake, and loved blowing out the candles so much we let her do it 5 times in a row!Happy Birthday Baby Bug!

40th Birthday Cake

I was asked to do a brown and white elegant cake for a 40th birthday party. Here's what I came up with. I made the numbers for the top out of chocolate, and used a stencil to mark the fleur de lis patterns on the frosting and piped them in. The recipient seemed happy with it and said it was delicious!

The numbers were held up with a chocolate covered mini-popsicle stick. Here's the back view.
And from the side.... I liked the look of the square layer on top of the circle.

Mini Cakes

I've made a bunch of mini cakes for friends birthdays-- here are two of my favorites!

This first one is wrapped in a layer of chocolate, which is a very fun and easy way to make an elegant cake. It was a great experiment!

The second one I made for a teenager-- kind of a cross between a giant cupcake and an ice cream sundae. Looks delicious to me :)

Dinosaur Cake

My friends little boy wanted a Dinosaur cake for his 6th birthday party. I had him over one day to play with my kids and spent some time with him looking on Google for dinosaur cakes so I could see what he wanted, then made this:
He loved it!

Happy Birthday Mr. C!

Jessi

This cake was my first experiment doing a five layer stacked cake and I definitely learned some things. This was also my first time using real flowers on a cake, which was a learning experience and made me nervous when I took a blank white cake to the reception center and just hoped they'd have enough flowers for the cake. Here are some of the things I learned from this one:
#1- don't make a lemon layer larger than 8 inches, the cake is too moist to hold it's shape.
#2- don't use Wilton's cake separator pegs, they aren't strong enough and they are ridiculously hard to put together when you're holding a 20 pound cake in one hand-- stick with good old fashioned wooden dowels.
#3- don't set up the cake when the ENTIRE wedding family and party is going to be there for a big photo shoot (not my fault, the mother of the bride told me no one would be there until 5:30 for the reception starting at 6:30, but they all showed up at 3:45).
#4- allow PLENTY of extra time to set up-- I am SO glad I had 2 and a half hours because this one took every minute.
#5- take a towel to dry hands and mini cake vases.
#6- Note to self: Red Velvet cake cannot be dyed purple, no matter how much blue you put in (the bride REALLY wanted a purple red velvet cake to cut into, I told her I would try.)

So, without further ado, here is the cake for Jessi:
Top layer: Red Velvet cake with cream cheese frosting
2nd: Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting (single layer, torte-ed)
3rd: Lemon cake with lemon filling
4th: Devil's food cake with no filling (single layer)
5th: Chocolate cake with raspberry filling

Frosted with a crumb coating and outer coating of pure white Buttercream icing. This was the smoothest frosting I have ever accomplished and would have been perfect if I hadn't had to transport the cake on a 100 degree day for 30 minutes in the car....
Even with all the craziness during the set up, I think this cake still turned out pretty gorgeous!

Big Blue Beastie

I love making character or themed cakes for my kids birthdays. This year my little boy turned four years old and we threw him a "Big Blue Beastie" party-- it's from a children's book called "Dexter Bexley and the Big Blue Beastie". If you haven't read this one, I highly recommend it! My very talented sister made Brennan a stuffed Beastie and I made the cake to look like her creation.

I even went so far as to color the white cake blue, so this Beastie was blue through and through. I just used an 11x15 casserole dish to bake the single layer cake, then cut out the right shape. I covered it in a smooth layer of blue buttercream frosting, then thought he should be covered in fur, so I used a star tip and squeezed away.
Brennan was ecstatic about the end result-- and it was yummy to boot!

Basket of Strawberries

Here is a small cake I made to take to someone for their birthday. It is a small cake, only 4 inches in diameter and about 6 inches high with the strawberries. I used Chocolate Hazelnut pirouette wafer cookies around the perimeter of the chocolate frosted cake. Topped with chocolate dipped strawberries and tied with a ribbon... mmmmm, looks scrumptious!

Amy

This was the first wedding cake that I did for payment, June of 2008. It was carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. The cakes were 10 inches in diameter and 4 inches tall. Each cake was finished off with a satin ribbon provided by the bride that was 1 1/2 inches wide. Tiny dots of white frosting accented the bottom.

The wedding flowers were Roses and Gerber Daisies in Red, Orange and Yellow. I made all of the flowers and leaves out of gum paste, and added white Stephanotis and tiny babies breath for a little pop.

The bride provided the plates and stands (candleholders actually), and I set up at her outdoor reception.

I added a little dimension and visual effect to this layer by doing Cornelli lace with the frosting.
The top layer was frosted smoothly. The crystal Temple that the bride provided as a cake topper was not very tall, so I made it "float" above the cake on four white dowels. I liked the effect of the flowers all the way underneath.
A close up of the flowers on the third layer-- this one was frosted with a creamy look (spatula marks visible).
I never put the flowers on the cake until the actual set up, for fear of breaking them during transport. It's good and bad however, because I am always nervous about "did I make enough?' and "Will the look in my head actually turn out?" So far, so good!

Wedding Cake

June 10th, 2010

3 layers
12" Styrofoam-- note to self: experiment more with styrofoam. I don't know if it was just the warm day, but the frosting tended to bubble away from the styrofoam as it sat, even though it was coated with a layer of shortening. Next time try frosting with Royal icing first, then Buttercream frosting on top.
8" White cake with strawberry filling
6" White cake with strawberry filling
Ribbon around the base of each layer. Silk Gerber Daisies to accent.
I added a cake board plate supported by dowels all hidden under the frosting on the top layer for the bride and groom figurine to stand on. I told the Mother of the Bride to make sure to take the topper off before cutting the cake to make sure it didn't topple down if it was bumped.

I set up the cake, took the photos, and then the Mother of the Bride moved a picture frame from the window sill to the cake table, and damaged the side of the cake in the process. I fixed it up as well as I could, but at least it was on the side and not the front! And it wasn't my fault :)
